What is Breathwork?
Breathing is something we do without effort or thought, it’s automatic, constant, and always there. But what many people don’t realise is that the breath is also a powerful tool for change. When we bring awareness to it, our breath can help us regulate stress, process emotion and reconnect with ourselves in a deeper way.
Over the past few years, I have been deepening my work, expanding beyond the physical body to include the emotional, the mental, and the unseen. This path led me to study psychotherapy and eventually to discover breathwork as a powerful tool for healing and self-regulation.
Now, I am bringing breathwork into my practice, alongside naturopathy and counselling, because it offers something I had not found in any other modality: a direct, embodied way to connect with your nervous system. To help process your emotions and feel present in your body.
If you have never heard of breathwork before or are curious about how it works, this blog is for you.
Breathwork is conscious breathing with a purpose.
At its simplest, breathwork refers to any practice that uses intentional breathing patterns to influence your physical, emotional, or mental state.
You are already breathing all the time. Breathwork just asks you to do it on purpose, in a way that supports your wellbeing.
There are many styles and schools of breathwork, but the kind I use in clinic is gentle, trauma-aware and focused on regulation and reconnection. I am not interested in pushing your body into a dramatic release or intense experience. I want to help you feel safe, steady, and reconnected with yourself.
Why breath?
When I first started exploring breathwork, what stood out most was how simple it was and how deeply it could shift things.
Your breath is one of the only body functions that operates automatically but can also be consciously controlled. That makes it a bridge between the unconscious and the conscious, the body and the mind.
The way you breathe affects your nervous system. Fast, shallow breathing can signal stress and keep your body in fight-or-flight. Slow, deep breathing can calm your system and bring you into rest and repair. But breathwork is not just about relaxing it is about reconnecting.
Through guided breathwork, you can:
Regulate your nervous system
Release stored tension and emotions
Improve sleep and digestion
Connect more deeply with your body
Feel more grounded and present
What does a breathwork session involve?
Sessions are gentle, guided, and entirely tailored to you. You’ll lie down or sit comfortably, and I’ll guide you through a specific breathing pattern that suits your needs and goals.
We might start with simple awareness noticing how your body is breathing. From there, we might shift into a more intentional rhythm, always staying within a range that feels safe and manageable. You don’t need to have done any breathwork before. You don’t need to be “good” at breathing. There is no performance, no test just you, your breath, and a space to listen inward.
Most clients find that as they settle into the practice, they begin to notice shifts. The mind slows down. The body softens. Emotions might surface. Old stories or tensions may start to release. Every session is different, and your experience is always welcome, exactly as it is.
A gentle alternative for a sensitive system.
A lot of my clients come in with nervous systems stuck in overdrive. They have been in a stress state for so long that it's become their baseline. They have tried everything—supplements, testing, different diets. And while those approaches absolutely have their role, something more is often needed.
Sometimes what is needed is not more information, but a different kind of support. Breathwork offers that.
It gives you a way to gently downshift your nervous system, without needing to talk it through or think it through. Your body gets to have its say.
This can be especially powerful if:
You struggle with anxiety or overwhelm
You feel disconnected from your body
You have done lots of “work” but still feel stuck
You are craving something more embodied and whole
How breathwork fits into my work now.
This is a new offering, but it is built on years of experience.
For those of you who have seen me as a naturopath over the years, you will know that I have always taken a whole-person approach. I care deeply about understanding your story, your nervous system, and how everything is connected.
I have recently completed my Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy, which has added a new dimension to the way I work. It helped me see just how often emotional patterns and unprocessed stress live on in the body, showing up as digestive issues, sleep disturbances, immune dysregulation, and more.
Breathwork bridges that gap. It gives us access to the nervous system and the emotional layers without bypassing the body
So now, depending on your needs, our work might include:
A standalone breathwork session (in-person or online)
Integrating breathwork into a psychotherapy session
A mind-body consultation that combines naturopathy and breath
Nervous system support plans including lifestyle, herbs, and breath
There is no single way to use breathwork; it is a flexible, supportive tool that can be adapted to what is most helpful for you.
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit.
Breathwork is not just for when everything feels too much. It can also be a regular way to reset, ground, and reconnect.
It is a tool that puts you back in the driver’s seat, not because you need to fix yourself, but because you deserve to feel safe and supported inside your own body.
If you have ever felt like you were stuck in your head, cut off from your body, or just not quite yourself… breathwork can help bring you back.
Curious to explore?
If you are curious about breathwork, or wondering whether it might be right for you, I would love to invite you in.
This work is still evolving, and so are the ways I offer it. You don’t need to have it all figured out, we can explore it together, at your pace.
